Heating and cooling small room

My parents have a 12x12 room on the back of their house that has mainly been used for storage. Now the have custody of 3 of their grandkids and need the room to be heated and cooled. This room is open to the rest of the house. However, the other night when temperatures were around 15 F, it was around 50 F in this room. running duct from the exisiting heat and air isnt feasible as the system is barely adequate for the house as is. I was wondering if a window heat/ac unit would do for this application or one of the portable units. Thank you.

That is a small area and I would use a 1500 watt oil filled electric radiator.

HDepot has them. They have 3 settings 500/1000/1500 watts and are silent.

For cooling a window AC would work or just let the house AC do the work and leave the door open to that room.

A lot of the portable units are junk. The single pipe units are borderline worthless.
If they want to invest, a minisplit heat pump would condition the room great.
Otherwise an electric radiator and window unit, or if they want to cut a hole in the house a PTAC unit.

A 92 year old brother heats and cools his house that's older than he is with 2 window unit heat pumps. He has even gotten kinda modern and makes settings and changes with his remote. He loves those things.

Sounds like this was a porch or other addition that may never have been insulated or considered for living conditions. Is the floor concrete or a wood platform above the ground?

Heating and cooling works hand in hand with good insulation and air dealing and it increases the comfort level.

And if the system for the main house seems too small, more insulation can make it work better.

Re: Heating and cooling small room

There is a initial cost consideration.

If you have to spend thousands of dollars for a heat pump or mini-split AC when a $85 electric heater and a several hundred dollar window AC can do the job you better look at your ROI.

The heater is 100% efficient and the other units use electric as well and power is not cheap or free so they may sound nice but they still use juice and almost as much.

ROI=return on investment. For a small room unless you plan to heat/cool it for a long time it may never pay off. The kids may leave and then it is back to a storeroom.

It was an add-on... Wood floor... It's the best insulated room of the house. R13 walls and r19 overhead... Vs hay and newspapers for the rest of the house... Lol

Re: Heating and cooling small room

What's under the wood floor and what climate region are you located in?

If and when you want to address all or nay part of the house for insulation and air sealing we do that a lot for people. Not only does it reduce the energy costs, but it significantly improves the comfort.

Best,
Bud
