Heat Circulation - Propane Stove

Hey Guys. Need some advice. I have a propane stove in the finished family room of split entry home. The home is electrically heated, so I want to use the stove to supplement. The problem is that the heat never leaves the family room. I suspect it is because of the way the basement was finished, so I am trying to figure out if there are modifications I can do to get better circulation.

There is no venting between floors. There are no doors around the stairs to prevent cold air from moving down stairs. While upstairs is fairly open, downstairs is a hallway with rooms (usually closed except for the family room). The stove is at the far end of a 12'x20' room where the only opening is a 36"x80" doorway (no door) at the opposite (near) end. The 12' wall nearest the doorway backs onto the stairwell.

When the stove runs on its lowest setting, the family room becomes very warm, anything higher becomes unbearable. But, as soon as you pass through the doorway, you're hit with cold air. There seems to be no transfer of heat through the opening.

So, I am been wondering if I should consider venting between floors (with fire dampeners) or opening up the wall that backs onto the stairwell to increase airflow. Also open to other suggestions. Thanks in advance.

Add another heater up stairs.

What kind of "stove" is this heater you are talking about?

Might want to try cutting a vent into the ceiling to go to the upper floor. See if that gets you enough heat transfer. If not, then opening up the wall at the steps is an option.
