Do capacitors just wear out or is there something behind them failing?

About 10 days ago my wife asked why the house was hotter than normal. I went down and checked the furnace and found it was frozen over and the blower was running slow. I checked the blower motor capacitor and got no reading at all. I managed to locate one through a friend of a friend and replaced it. Everything has been fine since. Is there something looming I should be watching for? Thanks

They rarely fail on furnace blower motors ( outdoor unit ones go often ).

IMO it is because they are made as cheap as heck in China or Malaysia etc and don't last like the old school ones.

Probably just a dud and nothing to worry about.

Outdoor they don't wear out so often but mice or lizards can be a problem when mounted with terminals UP.

My experience is with electrolytic caps on printed circuit boards, probably similar. Most failures I replaced were related to heat, many thousand replaced. Most were adjacent to or above a heat source.

But Yuri's comment "because they are made as cheap as heck in China or Malaysia" has a lot to do with it.

Lizards??

We have no lizards or snakes or allygators where I am.

I get mice being zapped on top of them and contactors when they are mounted flat.

What brands are USA made? Do they seem to be better and last longer?

The one that failed was GE and assembled in Mexico. The one I replaced it with was the same. To the best my knowledge it was 18 years old.

18 years is very good. I see them last less than 10 on outdoor AC units.

The Mexico stuff is pretty good as Honeywell and Lennox have been building parts there for 30+ years. The Asian stuff not so great.

Amrad are the only ones I purchase. They are more expensive, but they last longer than the cheap Chinese caps. The last one I changed was about 5 years ago on one of my rentals and I suspect it was damaged during a storm. This is a heat pump so it sees continuous use all year round and it was 10 years old I believe, maybe older. I always keep spares because when they do go it is always on a Holiday during a 3 day weekend at midnight!
