Hi everyone:

I'm looking at some old Whirlpool window a/c units, and trying to figure out how old they are. I called Whirlpool, and not surprisingly, spoke to 4 diff. departments, all of whom were clueless.

Does anyone know how to interpret the date code on a Whirlpool window air conditioner?

One of the models available to me is an ACS088GPW. Whirlpool said they had no record of that model. Anyone know anything about that model?

Post the serial # if you can find it. Most of them have a hidden code like 0720 which means built in the 7th month of the year 2020.

If you can find a part with a sticker on it usually they have that date code.

Can't get the serial number until tonight, as I'm not near the unit. Date code: 1911.

Also, anyone know why they describe these units as 14" wide, but then tell you that you need to have an opening 15.5" for it to fit? Is it because of the grill fins on the sides?

- If you see a date code 1911, it could be the 19th week of 2011 - so it looks like April 2011.
- Rough opening is larger than the unit itself, then you insulate the gaps to finish the installation.
Windows and door rough openings are also larger than the windows and doors: A 32" wide door needs a 33" wide rough opening.
Note: Support the unit outside with brackets or a shelf, so the a/c is level and sturdy.

What will happen if I put this in a vinyl window for a short period of time, without the sash in the window? Just a big air gap? It should rest of the left and right sides of the window frame, so shouldn't fall out, right?

I'd soon be cutting a wood template for it, but haven't finished cutting the template for my first unit due to health problems.

Listen, resting an a/c unit on the narrow window frame is not enough support. The a/c will vibrate, move, and since most of it is outside the window, it can even fall down. This is why you need support brackets. Your installation is not complete without supporting brackets.
And what about gaps in the window? If you allow warm air into the room while you run the a/c, do you really expect the a/c to do its job?

I got a wood cutout made for the larger window unit in the living room. I installed it and it fits perfectly. Thanks Dewalt for making a cordless jig saw that's so much fun to use.

I've got a smaller window unit in one of the bedrooms, but I need to make a cutout for that one. I'll do that on Monday.

I'm exhausted, esp. from the heat.
