Any reason I can't mix and match brands, specifically variable motors.

If they are the same tonnage, Is there any reason air conditioners/heat pumps can't be matched up with air handlers of different brands. I'm planning on piecing together a system to save money. Is there any reason I can't use a 3 ton trane heat pump with a variable motor and a carrier 3 ton air handler that is for variable motors? Are there some easy numbers I can match up if needed?

I'm about certain I will try to buy them new or close to it, and get a deal (especially since I'm willing to drive to pick it up). I think I can save a few thousand on a condensor. Air handlers seem to be much less, and I would buy one of those from the installer if needed, but wondering what kind of options I have.

Modulating equipment is often proprietary, meaning it can only work with like equipment of the same brand.
Make sure to get something with an AHRI match number, especially a heat pump. Generic mismatch equipment can be made to work but it will not be easy, or cheap.
You could wind up with mismatch problems and you’ll have to pay for a tech to reclaim refrigerant in the summer and add refrigerant in the winter.
What are the model numbers on these units?

Mix and match the way your suggesting, will give you an unknown capacity, and an unknown efficiency. Along with no manufacture warranty because of the mix and match.

Plus, most inverter units need to be connected to their proprietary thermostat, which won't work on another brands air handler.

The exception being Bosch, who doesn't use a proprietary thermostat.
