Question

Any idea what this box is?

I understand from a little research that the installer used the joist for panned return. But what is this box and is it necessary? It's creating quite an obstacle to framing and sheet rocking ceiling

(not sure why pictures uploaded upside down)

Thanks!

That was to get to the other side of the joist in the middle with out cutting it.
He could have picked a better spot.

Can you post picture of left an right of that area,?
Will you be looking at building walls there too?

Looks like an example of how to run a return air duct so as to be as hard to accommodate as possible. Maybe the HVAC contractor can explain/justify it... give them a call. It can be made to work but it's not going to be pretty.

It looks like this is at the furthest end of the return, so I don't know why they would combine one side with the other here, it would be done closer/at the handler. Why is the blocking there, the duct looks closed on the end, or was some duct removed before?

Looks like the blocking is one end of the duct. I would move it towards the AC lines as much as possible so your wall works out at the window opening.

Thanks for the reply. Yes, I would like to sheetrock the whole area if possible. I think they ran out of options for where to run the return based on how it was designed. If they stayed in the same bay they would have run into one of the hot runs going up or the chimney further down the wall

Any chance you could lower a the window 8" or change out for a shorter window?

Re: Any idea what this box is?

Extend the panning to the wall, and then move the jump box to the wall so its at least less inconvenient.
