Winterize sprinkler system or not???

I live in North West Louisiana and our winters are usually very mild so I have never given much thought to winterizing our sprinkler system, but this winter we have experienced below freezing temps for 3 or 4 days straight. Lowest has been in the upper teens.

First off, should I winterize my system for winters like ours?

Secondly, what would be the easiest method to do this?

I have attached two pics that show all of the equipment that is above ground, hope that helps.

Thanks in advance for the advice.

Short answer, yes. What you have above ground at this point, if it is energized, it is most likely toast. Your system should have a low end for draining and you should drain it like any other, opening the upper most valve and the lower most valve with the system off. Sometimes it helps to introduce compressed air to rid the system of water.

Ayuh,... It's waayyy to late for these thoughts this year,...
I suspect yer gonna find all kindsa freeze busted fittin's now,....
Water freezes, 'n expands at 32*,.... If it's been in the teens, it's to late,....

As Chandler says, it should be drained, 'n blown out each year, Before any freezin' weather,.....

That device above ground is a backflow preventer. They are usually the 1st thing to break if the system freezes. If the water is still turned on your system then didn't break anything because if you did you would have water flowing out of the backflow preventer.

In the future you are probably better off shutting off the system and blowing it out for winter. It doesn't take a lot of work and it's sure a great safety precaution.

ccm.....have you energized your system to see if anything broken ? It is possible nothing broke if...daytime temps were higher than night time temps.

Re: Winterize sprinkler system or not???

Check for broken parts or cracks around the valve first.
For next year, I would recommend that you get an automatic drain valve that drains water on its own.
Hope this helps.
