Will cutting a tree root kill tree?

I am trying to plant a cedar hedge and in one spot where I want to put a tree, there is a tree root. It belongs to my neighbor's tree which is about 40 ft tall. Would it substantially harm the tree if we cut this root away? It is about 5 ft away from the base of the tree.

If it fell, would it be toward you?

Re: Will cutting a tree root kill tree?

I would be interested to know this also, our neighbor's tree has roots which are on the verge of messing the footing up on our house, there are also roots running in several places in the yard that the lawnmower hits every time I mow. The bad part it is leaning toward our house, if that tree goes, it will for sure hit our house unless the wind is blowing hard the other way.

Re: Will cutting a tree root kill tree?

I wouldn't think one or two roots from a well established tree will impact either its health or stability.

I have to believe that a homeowner would be justified in removing roots from a neighbour's tree that are threatening a foundation. Much would probably depend on local land use laws. Up here a homeowner is allowed to cut roots and branches from neighbour's trees that encroach on their property so long as they don't kill it.

If it is on your side of the line it belongs to you, roots, limbs and whatever.

And no cutting a single root will not kill a tree and so what if it does.

Re: Will cutting a tree root kill tree?

The tree is slightly uphill from me so I assume it would fall my way although it is hard to believe one root cut would kill the entire tree. Anyway, the tree does not look healthy already and is starting to get crown die-off.

Mind you a couple of years ago after an ice storm, this tree lost a huge limb in my backyard. It's an accident waiting to happen.

It seems the first concern would be how big the root is, and the layout of the land. Physically, if it's on a slant and the root supporting it is large , it could possibly fall toward the OP. All 40 feet.

We haven't seen the tree. One of my trees out front, a mulberry, has an enormous root that would definitely affect the tree, if it was cut. How much is a hedge affected by a root anyway?

Can you talk to the owners?

I think the one you are talking about is the tangent hand rail, that was my first one, took a little over three weeks. Thanks

Sorry for the hijack.

Well it is very impressive. Is that 1822 home you restored, your home?

You are obviously a highly skilled and talented craftsman.

No, that is not my home, I could only wish. We went there to check if the siding was any good under the aluminum siding, we were there for several years. I did restoration work of the antique homes for about 15 years of my career. The 1822 home also had a tangent stair rail but not as involved as the one pictured. I appreciate your kindness.
