Maybe it's a Pinch Bug. To kill, just step on them.

Looks like a Stag Beetle.

no reason to stomp on them, they are harmless

joecaption 07-22-2013 05:47 PM

Scoop them up with a dust pan and put them outside.

I know you're right... but it sure looks like it means business.

Why does it seem that most everyone here that finds an unknown insect has an insatiable desire to squash it?

SoxFan44 07-22-2013 09:51 PM

The problem is, they have a nest a foot from my kids swing set. I've seen at least 2 dozen of them hanging out near a 3/4" hole in the ground. I was asking how to kill them because they looked like they could seriously mess up someone if they bit them, but it turns out only the females can hurt you. So not sure what to do.

cleveman 07-22-2013 09:56 PM

How do you sex them?

She looks pretty hot to me...oh, the Stag Beetle!

Yeah, they look mean, but apparently they are actually helpful. http://beneficialbugs.org/bugs/Groun...ag_beetles.htm

Scoop them up, put them in a frying pan, toss with some salt and cook them until they get crispy. Nice and crunchy!

Some kind of good insect killer sprays and powders are helpful in killing such kind of insects.
