What are these weeds and trees

Hello everyone. I have two quandries for you.

As spring has finally arrived here in Michigan I have once again turned my attention outside and while I knew my lawn wasn't in the best of shape it seems I'm loosing the war in a few places. I have some creeping charlie that I've been able to keep on top of, but whatever this is doesn't seem to want to die.

It seems to create a thick blanket over the ground

My next one doesn't seem to spread rapidly but I'm not sure what it is:

That's it for weeds. Now onto trees.

I have this one that the wife wants to get rid of:

I also have this one:

Re: What are these weeds and trees

The second tree looks like a cherry. I have two in the garden that have the same horizontal lines in the bark. They already have green fruit.

Did someone just cut the top of the tree off at one time?

Could you just let the first tree bloom & identify it from that? They may look a lot better if properly pruned, later.

Re: What are these weeds and trees

I have no idea what was done to either tree. I haven't done anything to either tree since I moved in a few years back.

When the first tree blooms I'll post some pics. I've been meaning to do this for sometime but finally remembered today.

I usually like identifying plants, but can't with these. Not sure if those furry buds are flowers or new leaves. Here's a weed tool.

Thought I posted this one, but I didn't. From the link above it appears to be Purple Deadnettle.

That's kind of creepy.

I have some of those weeds from the link, in my garden, too.

Re: What are these weeds and trees

The first tree looks like an apple. A judicious pruning and you might get some pie material!
Sorry, no help on the second one. The bark looks like silver birch but I don't recognize those blossoms at all. It looks like somebody cut it off high on the trunk but it decided not to die.

Re: What are these weeds and trees

maybe a dumb question, but, if the plan is to get rid of them (trees), why care about identifying them?

Reasonable question! She only wants to get rid of the first tree. She likes the second one. I figured if I knew what it was I could possibly figure out how to prune it properly and thus avoid having to get rid of it and then replace it.

I'll keep an eye on it for when it blooms and then hopefully we can figure it out. I'm sure the deer will beat me to any pie material.

I agree that it looks like it was cut at some point although that would be really odd since it's right next to the front door.

The blooms on that tree look just like the ones on the Sargent Crabapple trees in my front yard. That would be my best guess.

So many of the flowers of fruit trees look alike. Beautiful photos by the way. Here's a rather useful presentation of flowers, leaves & bark, if you can identify the leaves, esp.

The original second tree still looks like a cherry. The fruit is already reddening here.

I think your first weed might be purslane. It's funny, I just bought a seed packet of the related portulaca!

Re: What are these weeds and trees

Second is a weeping cherry but you will not get any cherries. First is a crabapple of some sort, probably not edible either but the birds like them.

Re: What are these weeds and trees

The tree is cherry indeed. Not cut but grafted on another rootstock.
