Weedwacker starts and dies off

My weedwacker starts up but then dies off. I changed the spark plug, cleaned the arrestor screen, changed gas, replaced fuel lines and replaced fuel filter. It is a ryobi 253ss. I also adjusted the idle screw. Should I just replace the carb? Thanks for any advice.

Re: Weedwacker starts and dies off

I just got my Echo back from the shop. The repair person said it was a spec of dirt lodged in the needle valve of the carb. He saved it and showed it to me. Amazing what a little trash can do. Maybe not replace the carb, but clean it. Mine would start and even run at 3/4 choke, but would die when taken off choke. Not sure if that is your symptoms or not.

He runs ethanol free gas at 50:1 and Stabil in all his equipment due to the poorer quality of gas nowadays.

Chandler's post makes sense. People forget how tiny the carb passages are on those little things.

Re: Weedwacker starts and dies off

I use Husqvarna string trimmers, but when that happens to me, and the idler adjustment doesn't work, I put a good dose of Seafoam in the machine. I will smoke like crazy out the exhaust for a short time, but usually cleans things out.
I also keep a spare carb on hand. Low $20s from Amazon. Worth to have a spare just in case.

I have started to use ethanol free gas, like Chandler's friend. Reduces a lot of problems in small engines.

Re: Weedwacker starts and dies off

I did replace the fuel lines so there is a chance some dirt got in there during the replacement. I actually can see that one of the lines doesn't have fuel going through it (or very little, which was not a problem before I changed the lines. I suppose it must be clogged (Chandler likely correct here).

For gas I use Trufuel off the shelf, which gives it the perfect 50:1 mix and no eth.

Re: Weedwacker starts and dies off

Most two cycle lawn tool carbs are built similar like the Walbro carb. They have a internal fuel inlet screen inside the carb that needs to be cleaned. UTOOB is your friend for "2 cycle carb clean".... videos.

I would not spend too much time or money on a carb rebuild though, cheaper to replace with a new one at $15-20.00 for a non -OEM unit.

Re: Weedwacker starts and dies off

I have a problem with one from a different manufacturer. Tried a new carb with no luck.
Turns out, the choke flap was bent outward over time so too much air is being sucked on on start. I have to remove the air cleaner cover and hold the plastic flap down so I can choke and start it.
