weeds killing fertilizer ?

morning news, on friday, they have a home improvement guy on.
one day was lawn care. he said if you put this stuff on your lawn, the weeds will not like growing there. something about the weeds liking something in the soil, PH ? idk. and this fertilizer will neutralize whatever it is and the weeds will go away.

i was not in front of the tv, so i didn't catch just what it was.
but i sure would like some.

any ideas ?
thanx

It was lime. It raises the Ph to where weeds won't tend to grow. Weeds generally like an acid soil. You lime in the dead of winter to give it time to work in the soil so spring emergence won't be so drastic.

It comes in sealed bags, so kept out of the rain it will be fine. I prefer pelletized Dolomitic lime. I spread about a ton a year on my property with a cone spreader on my tractor and find the peletized less dusty.

Re: weeds killing fertilizer ?

The natural degradation of plant life and things like pine needles, all tend to decay and cause the soil to become acid. Rain even brings with it things in the air that are acidic. It is easier to make soil acid than to neutralize it or make it alkaline, which is what most plants like. Except for azaleas, blueberries, hollies, etc.

Re: weeds killing fertilizer ?

Lime is not a weed killer. You can get just as many weeds going with a high PH.
You just may not get as many of a certain type, but the other types will make up for it.

Or instead of 100 weeds you will only have 99.

Also poster did not say if they wanted to be able to grow grass in the same area and what type.
So makes it hard to recommend.

Re: weeds killing fertilizer ?

RRH is correct, but it does sweeten the soil and make it an inhospitable place for weeds that like acid soil to survive.

Not directed at Chandler.

It seems to depend on where you live. We have a lot of alkaline soil. Maybe he should test the pH, first? Just a cheap test from a hardware store will do.

Re: weeds killing fertilizer ?

I think it is entirely a locality thing and tests should be performed as well. My statement was to clarify the purpose of the lime. Here, we have acidic soils for the most part and an abundance of weeds.

Most Cooperative Extension Services offer good soil testing and will gear it to what you are doing. If you have a lawn or a garden, the print out will determine what nutrients, etc. are needed.

thats what i was thinking. i have a tree, told it is a silver poplar. this thing drops leaves 24/7/365, no kidding. and a lot of sticks. i would break my back picking all of the sticks up. so i just pick up the bigger ones. then mulch everything else.

i am trrying to keep the creeping charley at bay.
