Weed Identification

Can anyone tell me what this weed is. Or is it a wild flower of some kind? It suddenly has popped up all over my yard, especially around the base of the house, sheds and in flower beds. https://www.diychatroom.com/attachme...1&d=1564300836

Re: Weed Identification

Again, I advise that you take one to your County Agriculture Extension Office.

They have professionals there that are experts on what grows in your area, and your tax dollars have paid for this service, use it.

I apologize for being curt, I have advised many others to do this same thing, So it is on many other queries as to what plant this is.

Re: Weed Identification

I enjoy looking thru plant photos, so I just looked at a couple hundred weeds including invasive weeds for NC. Nothing looks exactly like that.

Is there a neighbor's tree or bush that could have sent out seeds?

No worries. I'd generally take it to the "county office", as we call it locally, but (1)it's a weekend and (2)they're not real convenient to me, so it might be weeks before I'd get there. I have used them in the past, though, and agree that's they are an invaluable resource that too few people know about or take advantage of. They've helped me several times with soil samples from the yards of homes I've owned as well as water samples and helped with identifying some past yard weeds and pests and ways to eradicate them. Thanks for your help, btw. I do believe it to be wild poinsettia. I found some today that has matured enough that it's starting to get some reddish/pink spots on the leaves. I wonder if a previous owner had planted it at some time in the past and it had laid dormant for a while. I recently repaired the irrigation system at that location, so it's getting more water than it has been in the past(since I've owned it). Now, I wonder whether to try to get rid of it or let it grow? My biggest complaint is that it's growing beneath shrubs and hedges and popping up in other flowers that have been recently planted.

I also looked through hundreds of photos and descriptions, trying to find something similar. Someone pm'ed me a photo of "wild poinsettia" and that appears to be what it is. Heck, I'd never even heard of wild poinsettias. They sure didn't come up in my search of weeds. That why I also mentioned wild flowers, just on the outside chance that it could have been one of those. But I had even searched eastern NC wild flowers and didn't see it mentioned in my searches. The previous homeowners were older folks, so they may have planted it, hoping to attract birds, bees, butterflies, etc. I've found some other types of plants that would also fit that description, so it appears they may have been trying to attract stuff like that. I can't say that I'd dislike it, I just don't want the stuff popping up in unwanted places and I didn't like the notion of not knowing what it was or whether it could develop into a bigger problem of some kind. I've already had the pleasure of "discovering" FL Betony in the yard and can't seem to get rid of it. As far as either of these things coming from a neighbors yard, it's entirely possible but I haven't noticed it.

I have a cassette, of his greatest, which contains that one as well as Lucille, and others that are good.

You just stay off that windmill, or I'll have to fly up there to get you down, ya hear.

Re: Weed Identification

@mrlabradog , sorry for hijacking your thread! All in good fun, I hope.

As penance, I took a stab at ID and it looks like "Wild poinsettia" might be a correct ID. https://friendsofeloisebutler.org/pa...oinsettia.html

One key characteristic of Euphorbias is their milky "latex" sap. Yank a leaf off one of yours and if this milky juice drips out, it's likely a wild poinsettia.

The actual poinsettia of Christmas fame is from Mexico, and grows well out here in the Land of La La. I'll dig up a picture of a cultivar blooming at Christmas in my neighbor's yard and post it.

Euphorbias, as a group are what my dad would have called a motley crew, i.e., an extremely varied bunch of plants, quite amazing, really.

Here’s the poinsettia in my neighbor’s yard from last December.
