Weed identification

This a pic in the pasture, right next to the backyard. I pulled a lot of these, in this location of pasture and backyard last year. They are growing again in the same locations.

Does anyone know what this weed is?

Appreciate the info and the link, SeniorSitizen.

Now, I have an idea of what it is. I can research the best way to get rid of it.

Thank you,

Rich

Thanks for the info, SeniorSitizen. The weed/plant is a Milk Thistle.

I learned of a local University that has a Facility that will ID any plant that a person has a question on. At no charge. A person can visit the facility or mail a sample for Identification.

Here's the link: http://herbarium.ucdavis.edu/services.html

I was going to visit this place, but, they require a person to contact them to set up an appointment. So, I emailed them and attached the picture. The Curator emailed me back within a half hour and ID'd the weed/plant as Milk Thistle. Saved me a trip.

Curator didn't have advice on how to eradicate it from the yard and pasture, so, I think I'll try the Round-Up approach.

Thanks, again.

Rich

Re: Weed identification

The Milk Thistle got cut down to just the stems (I don't know the proper term).

Then I used the Round-Up. Results were great.

For the past few months, I've sprayed Weed-B-Gone concentrate 3 times to rid the yard of crabgrass and broadleaf weeds.

Friday, I noticed these flowers throughout the whole pasture, and, many locations in the yard. The second and third pic, below, is in the yard. They don't seem to be affected by the Weed-B-Gone.

I've been Googling pictures of purple wildflowers and I believe they are, but, none are exactly the same.

I did send another email to the herbarium for positive ID, but, I am wondering if anyone here has any idea of what it is, and, how to get rid of it from the yard.

Re: Weed identification

Woodchopper,

Wife and I had talked in the past about getting goats, donkeys, or horses in the pasture, but came to the conclusion not to have any more animals.

The past couple of years, I let the neighbor(who shares the fenceline to my pasture) put his cows in the pasture. It worked out well, except...when the cows would be at the fenceline between the pasture and my yard, my dogs would harass the cows. As the cows grew, they would be more rambunctious and try to push through the fence towards the dogs. My granddaughters are here often, so, I would definitely not want the cows to knock the fence over and end up in the yard. Especially, when I'm not at home. I've stopped having the neighbors cows in the pasture.

Future plan is to buy a Tractor with a brush hog.

The Curator from the herbarium emailed me back. She told me to Google pics of the weed White-stem Filaree(Erodium Moschatum). I'm seeing a few different weeds in the Google pics that are in my yard. White and Red-stem for sure. In the link, it shows the seed, http://www.ipm.ucdavis.edu/PMG/WEEDS...m_filaree.html.
From time to time, one of my dogs has these seeds throughout her thick fur. I have to pick them out.

So now the research is on to rid the yard of them. Suggestions anyone?

Thanks
