Is this a weed?

I had a landscaping overhaul done last spring with new sod and I've started to see some grasses shoot up- are they weeds? Some are in mulch beds some are in the lawn. Weird that they are grouped together could it have come over from a neighbor?

Thanks.

Re: Is this a weed?

It looks like bulb or perennial foliage. Try digging down in the mulch bed and you'll find a mass of roots or bulbs.

Re: Is this a weed?

All grasses are weeds. Just a different type. most likely Crabgrass.

It probably came in the fill dirt. Yes it could come from a neighbor mowing and the clippings fly off to other yards.

Go get some post emergent, or pay a local company to do it. I am paying the local TruGreen around $30 to try and get my backyard into shape.

Re: Is this a weed?

So I dug them up and it looks like there are bulbs down there so it's not crab grass. Might just let them go and see if I get any flowers?

Can't hurt to let them go and see if anything blooms. They might not do anything this year due to the weird weather.

Looks like a standard form of Grass type plant or weed. I would not just let it go if in doubt. The last thing you need taking over the beds and yards is some foreign plant.

Re: Is this a weed?

I believe that is onion grass. Break a leaf and smell it
My guess is that it smells like an onion. That is notoriously difficult to get rid of. To try, dig down all around the clump and pull it out carefully. You want to remove as many of the tiny onions as possible. If you keep after kit you will get rid of it but it will take a few tries. Otherwise buy a broadleaf weed killer and spray it. Again it may take a few attempts.

That's it! Must be left over from before when the yard was completely overgrown. Looks like I need to try and get the bulbs out and might take a couple seasons. Thanks!

Re: Is this a weed?

It comes up in my yard every year in different spots. I am guessing it is from the birds "planting" it in their birdpoop!

Re: Is this a weed?

A weed is simply an unwanted "wild" plant in an area of cultivated plant(s).

What part of the country are you in? Looks like Siberian Squill. They're a pretty common lawn weed. Makes for some pretty yards in the spring though unintended.

Re: Is this a weed?

Update: the onion grass seems to have lost the battle so far. None in the grass/mulch beds and it hasn't reappeared (yet). Maybe it's just a April/May plant.

How about this guy? It's making its way over from my neighbors yard. Easy to pull up and grows in bunches.
