Walkway ideas

Hey all,

I have a pathway from a gate to the backyard on the side of the house. Right now this path is overgrown weeds because i just bought the house and havent got to this part yet. I wanted to dig up the weeds and put some landscaping fabric down and put some sort of low maintenance pathway down thats not grass. Is there any cheap and easy pathways I can build here? like brick? or gravel with stepping stones? pallet wood walkway? plywood?

Thanks,

Ryan

Where are you? Please put that in your signature. This type of thing is quite location specific.

Sorry about that. I am in Salt Lake City, Utah. So we do get a little snow in the winter and rains in the spring.

SLC is a bit on the deserty side, though I'm not sure it's actual desert.

That said, you could probably get away with a brick path over sand or gravel and some weed cloth underneath.

Bear in mind that you will still get weeds popping up after rains after organic material accumulates a bit between the bricks and the weedcloth, but it's a lot easier to deal with them.

I'd put down a substrate of at least 6" and pound it down so it won't sink.

Kind of depends on what you want and how much work you're willing to put into the job. At the most simple and basic, you could just throw down some concrete paver tiles as stepping stones and let them sink on their own as the vegetation under them dies and the soil compacts.

Re: Walkway ideas

This is the first time i have owned a home and had a lawn and backyard. I grew up in a trailer and apartments. I am also not the handiest person alive. I just want simple and cheap. If digging up the weeds and some of the dirt, lying down the weed cloth, place a good layer of sand or gravel and place the stepping stones there. Do you guys think that would look OK? i know its hard to tell with no picture. But appreciate the effort.

Re: Walkway ideas

You could rent a tiller for the path.

Till it deep enough to get the roots.

Then use one of these.

Compact the soil with a hand tamp

Then protect the path with.

You can put down.

wood
concrete
pavers
(colored) stone
etc.........

Don't forget some drainage.
