Very bumpy lawn - Can a machine roller fix it?

I have a DIY lawn that came out with a lot of bumps because I guess I didn't roll out the top soil even enough in a lot of places (no hills or rolls, just bumps).

Will it hurt the grass if I rent a big machine roller to even it out in the spring time like this time of year? Will that fix it?

Let's see a few pics of the current conditions.

If your grass is healthy and established, I would not think it will harm it. Big fertilizer trucks with their super wide tires drive all over the golf courses while spreading fertilizer, and everyone knows how picky the golf course supers are about their turfs. JMO though.

While rolling may help get rid of the bumps it will definitely compact the soil. Compacted soil is not good for grass growth. Yes, golf courses have large trucks drive over there fairways dispensing's fertilizer but they also aerate extensively to overcome the compaction issues.

How new is your lawn? Most times the new lawn will be somewhat bumpy anyway and new lawn bumps will become better as a lawn matures.

Soak the lawn a few days before you roll it. If you plan to do it on a weekend, start the Monday before....soak it real good....then repeat on Wednesday.

Depending on your climate, you may want to give it a good water on Friday.

The basic idea is to get the soil real moist to about 6" down. But you don't want it soggy.

You can also use sand to level lumpy lawn. Spread it around and then level it with a wide stick or an upside down push broom. There are companies that do this, and golf courses do it too. There's a company here called 'The Sand Man' that does leveling.

Moles can turn your lawn lumpy.
