Too much rock for grass?

My backyard is small and about half of it is in need of grass. I decided to till it up and grade it before planting, and I've hit a huge chunk of what I believe is shale. So far it's at least 10 feet across and a foot thick, and now I have no idea what to do. I'm using hand tools, so should I just dog out the rock to about 3 inches below where I want the grass and bring in dirt, then plant? I'm at a loss here. You can see in the pictures some of what I'm dealing with.

Re: Too much rock for grass?

You are gonna want at least 4-6 inches of top soil at that spot so keep breaking it if you can.

I'm going to keep working on it until I get an estimate from and excavating company on Monday, then I'll see how it goes from there. I'm really hoping to get a few friends together over the weekend and knock this thing out, or at least finish the digging.

Where are you located?
Have you considered other no-grass options?

This is what we did, we could not be happier:

I'm in Kentucky, so that explains a lot of it. I've considered doing exactly what you've done, but I have a 2 year old who loves being outside, and I'd like to try to make the space usable for the whole family. However, after I get some estimates, I'm open to the idea. We bought the house last year thinking that the grass would be an easy fix, but now it has more to do with using the yard while we have it and working on making everything presentable when we sell in a few years.
