Tapping into main for irrigation

Should this be in plumbing? I'll start here.

Need to tap into the main for irrigation. When I dug up where I wanted to do this, about 2 feet from the meter I found this. Perhaps an old repair? I was going to post and ask what type of tee to use but expected just some 3/4" pipe. What's the preferred way to add a tee here. Looks to be not copper as I had hoped.

I will use sch 40 1" to the shut off and then PCB.

looks like some type of transition coupling with a reducer. What's the material type of the pipe? looks like galvanized steel? To answer your question, you can cut out a section of pipe and drop in a tee with slip on transition couplings on both side of the tee.

That is a Dresser coupling (Google it) for galvy pipe. You could replace it with a Dresser tee.

Thank you. I decided not to tap into there for fear of breaking that galvanized pipe. I went from the crawl space where the main enters the house. This also gives me a better location for the PVB.
