Stop Root

I just bought a new (actually 1970"s) house two months ago. Recently had our first significant rain and saw one downspout was not draining at all.

Excavation found a major root had infiltrated under the pipe, lifting, breaking and blocking it.

The root is gone now, but was a good 2 1/2 inches wide where I cut it on the outside. I don't want to poison the root or further damage the tree, but is there something I can treat it with that will stop or slow the root from doing this again?

Re: Stop Root

#1, "Trees" should never be that close to a foundation.
#2, Remove the pipe and replace with SCH 20 PVC and add an elbow and proper downspout adapter.

Short of removing the tree, no.

Re: Stop Root

Thanks Chris, that is what I figured. Guess I'll just have to keep an eye on it.

Joe, the nearest tree is 30 - 35 feet away. The rest is already done. I 'm afraid this was the last warm (in the 70's!!) day off I may see this year. Thanks.
