Sprinkler head sticking out of driveway

Recently had work done to widen the driveway using interlocking stone. Their was an old sprinkler on the lawn that the contractors worked around. I'll post a link to the picture in my next post (as this is my first post, I can't post a link).

This is obviously a problem and sort of defeats the purpose of having extra parking space, and it just looks bad. My father-in-law sent me this pic (his house) and asked if I could help. While I'm good with my hands and have a technical background, I have virtually no experience in landscaping and little ideas on how to solve this. Any help would be appreciated!

Additional note: The contractors said we should just put some concrete around it and make it like a speedbump. I was hoping for a solution that also looks good. It's currently around the 0 degree Celsius mark (Southern Ontario, Canada). Thanks in advance!

Update: Oh no, it looks like it might a shut off valve for the water main connection! Any chance of fixing what it looks like at least?

It would sure help if we knew what it was.

(Looks too small for a supply shutoff to me)

That is a Buffalo Box and at the bottom is the shutoff for the municipal water supply. It should have been pulled out and shortened to be flush with the surface of the pavers. Ask if you water supplier will do it.

I believe it says water / power on the cap.

That probably is a marker for the community water and power to locate where their water line is.

And here it's a crime to mess with them unless you get permission from the authority.

That said, check with the water/ power authority there for a suggestion for your problem.

Looks exactly like the municipal water shutoffs that I'm familiar with around here. Call your municipality to get them to lower it flush then trim pavers around it. I have seen where private sump traps and such have been buried under pavers then marked by using pavers of a different colour but I doubt they would allow it. Better pre-planning would have been helpful.

Re: Sprinkler head sticking out of driveway

Just had my driveway paved. The local water guys came out on short notice and did a great job of setting the shut-off down to the appropriate grade. They even put one of those little mini-manhole covers over it. Very professionally done.

Ayuh,..... As noted, that's the curb-stop for yer water supply,.....

Most curb-stops are adjustable for height,....
Some get turned, most, ya just tap it down with a sledgehammer,....
Yer water utility should be willin' to help ya set it to grade,...

If it's not adjustable, it can be cut off, 'n rethreaded, then the cap screwed back on,.....

Yes! That's what the guy from the water company did! He was a pretty big guy. He first tried with a regular hand sledge hammer. He ended up asking if anyone had a bigger one, to save him a trip back to his truck. I had a great big sledge in the shed. He pounded on that thing! Me and the paving foreman looked on, expecting a geyser any moment.

All's well that ends well. Any time I've had those guys do any work for me, I've always learned something.
