sprinker startup question

Hello all - please be gentle because this may be a really dumb question.

I was trying to startup my sprinker system myself and watched a couple of videos on how to do it.
basic steps I tried to follow -
1. Make sure the petcocks are tight.
2. Ball valves are closed.
3. Turn on water in basement
4 - Then planned on slowly opening the ball valves outside

Now, in the part that is outside the house with the two ball valves and backflow part is - has a hose bib/drain type thing there.
I didn't see this part in any of the videos I saw - some of them refer to a drain near the main water supply but I don't have that.

That was open , so when I tried turning on the main water supply from the basement, it flows out of there ouside - since the ball valves (?) are still closed.
I am assuming I need to shut that tight and then turn on the water?

I hope this makes sense. TIA for any input !!

Re: sprinker startup question

Close everything outside.
Open the valve inside. No water should flow at this point.
Open the first petcock (closest the supply)
Open the second one.
Turn on your sprinkler system.
Manually step through the zones allowing the air to purge from each one.
Done.

My company wants $40 bucks from me for that. It takes all of five minutes and requires no special equipment or knowledge. No thanks.
