spreading fertilizer pellets, uneven coverage still works?

18 pound bag covers 5000sqft.
at 3.6lb per 1000, the pellets were scattered sparsely.

how's the grass supposed to get the nutrients like this?

The only thing I can figure is they are counting on the pellets to melt with the rains, and then the fertilized water will spread out in a certain circumference sized circle = more coverage ? I dunno...

It does, how I can't tell you. Put too much and you will learn. I'm challenged spreading it that thin so at the rentals or for new seeding I use 10-10-10 and apply enough to see the coverage.

The - "actual" - amount of each element applied is what's important and not so much the pounds in the bag that will cover XXX sq. ft.

It is better to use fertilizer sparingly. It is food....not medicine. Two light feedings 30 days apart is better than one heavy feeding...in most cases. Post#4 has it right.

Check out Milorganite for a fertilizer that you can spread heavy and not have to worry about burning your lawn. It breaks down slowly and works into the soil instead of dissipating to the atmosphere.

Re: spreading fertilizer pellets, uneven coverage still works?

I have no problem spreading it thin. I was just curious how the plant gets food with 10% coverage. I was thinking the greening would be spotty this way.

I just laid down 3.8 pounds of 18/24/6 starter fertilizer, and it's mostly slow release, so I probably couldn't burn the lawn if i put a little extra.

I'll find out later this week if my rental house grass shows any change.

I can't explain the 'how' but spread as directed you get even greening.
