Some sort of lawn insect...

At least I think it's an insect. First off region is coastal New Hampshire. I haven't actually seen the suspect but but the evidence is leaves being rolled up and pulled about 1/2"-1" into the ground in a ~1/4" dia. hole. It's one of the stranger things I have seen and it's happened the last few falls now. I only notice it because even the leaf blower has trouble dislodging these leaves. Just wondering what on earth is doing this. I can post a picture later but I wanted to post before I forgot (again)

Natures composters ....they like grass clippings also.

No sport in digging .....used to water the lawn and go hunting for them at night with a flashlight.
Try it sometime and you'll find out how strong they really are.
