Seed/overseed, then weed, or the other way around?

My lawn is probably about half weeds, half grass with a few bare spots that will need to be filled in. I want to get it decent. From what I found out online, seeding then using herbicide would work out faster than killing all the weeds, then waiting for some four months to seed. But if I overseed over weeds, I'm afraid the grass just won't grow. Any suggestions? Would spraying just a bit of herbicide over the top, so that it doesn't penetrate the ground do the trick to get rid of weeds?

It's a little late in the year right now to do over seeding. I would just let be what you have right now, use a good weed and feed fertilizer a couple of times over the summer to try to at least keep the weeds at bay and then doing power over seeding in the fall. Fall is deftly the best time of year to do over seeding anyway.

You may want to shop different products. Killing first is the way to go. New grass may not be treated until after the third mowing.

You can safely seed after 24 dry hours with most contact herbicides. Crab grass pre-emergent prevents regular seed germination and may not be applied to seedlings.

Fall is the best time to seed but sometimes we don't have a choice.

Thanks! I think I'll give that a try. It should be raining in a week or two, and grass sprouts and grows very well in my yard with or without watering. Should be good timing to spray basic spectracide, then seed in a week.

Crossbow and generics, available at farm stores, is a good all purpose contact herbicide. Depending on the concentration used it can be used for everything from broad leaf weed control in lawns to a brush stump killer.

I like to think you can seed any time of the year, except in snow and extreme heat.
Add water, and it's still gonna grow.

I'm facing the same problem in socal. Half my lawn is weed grass. I just sprayed glyphosate on those parts, and I'm preparing to seed tall fescue in the coming weeks.
