Round 1 pre-emergent lawn application

So I get home last night and there's a sign in my yard and a bill in my door from my lawn fertilization company. They came out and applied the first round of the year - crabgrass pre-emergent and fertilizer. Little surprised...it's still winter here in Michigan. Ground is still frozen, supposed to be snow flurries today. Is it too early to apply this stuff? I asked around my office this morning and I seem to be the only person whose lawn company has come out to do this. They do use the slow release granules, not the liquid stuff.

If they applied a slow release fertilizer, it will just sit there until its needed and temperatures warm up. Soil temperatures need to get above 50 degrees before active growth will begin. No problem I know of with the pre-emergent application, other than its very early, and may not be working when crabgrass starts to grow. Most pre-emergents only work for 60-90 days.
