ribbon driveway

i have a hard pack road mix driveway. i want to place two 2 ft. wide strips (ribbon). my plan is to roto-till the strip down 4 inches. leave the loose material in the strips, then lay rock chips down and compact it, adding more rock chips as it compacts down. will this make a solid track to drive on? thanks for any info you might have. god bless.

Re: ribbon driveway

compacted road mix. the base of my driveway is a hard dirt, the surface has about 1/2 inch to an inch of loose dirt/dust.if i dig down 4 inches the it should be a pretty firm strip.

Ayuh,..... Hard packed road gravel will laugh at a roto-tiller,.....

If yer gonna end up with a gravel 2 strip driveway,.....
I'm wonderin' just what you expect to change by loosenin' the strips,...??....

Re: ribbon driveway

Put down 3" of 3/4 crushed and compact it in with a heavy plate compactor that will firm up the dirt, then put what ever you want on top of that and compact it again.
I have done that with top soil, the driveway still looks good after 30 years.

I sure wouldn't want to be a the operator.

And what is a ribbon drive way? Are we talking about the 2 tire track ruts on a dirt drive?

Re: ribbon driveway

normally once the strip was loosened, the loose dirt would be removed. leaving a 2 ft. wide 4 inch deep trench. then a base material would be laid down, then the rock chips then it would all be compacted down using a compactor. what want to do is loosen the same area, leave the loose soil as the base, lay the rock chips on top of the loose dirt, compacting this will use the loose dirt unde the rock chips to bind together. i would keep adding the rock chips and compacting it until i got a semi-smooth hard driveable surface.

Re: ribbon driveway

Honestly I would not spend my time digging out "ribbons". I would level by raking or grading, then have a load of stone brought in telling the driver to tail-gate spread it the length of the drive way.

Re: ribbon driveway

i was looking at using "Brick Chips" crushed up bricks, 3/4 inch. pack the brick chips into the loose dirt, compact it, add more chips, compact it. issue is will the brick chps hold up when compacted or do you think the compactor will just turn them to dust?

Probably, all I know is a gravel guy told me what to do instead of hauling the dirt out and it worked.

Re: ribbon driveway

i have considered doing that. because there is a slight rise in my driveway i wanted a harder surface that would be easier to drive up without spitting out any chips. pluse the look of the two ribbons with grass outlining the tire strips will look much better. that is why i am looking at colored rock chips.....
