Retaining fence

I would like to level out the 4x40' area on the side of my driveway, the issue though is I have grumpy neighbors on that side. I would like to build a retaining wall 16 inches at the tallest following the slope of the driveway. Another issue is that The neighbors are very property line demanding so I can't have anything to wide that will fall over into their side, nor block my gate to my backyard from opening. Is there a wall or fence sturdy enough to handle the weight of the dirt but thin enough to handle my issues?

Re: Retaining fence

We don't know the dimensions of the wanted retaining wall.

2X 12 lumber bolted to 4X4 posts would hold this back.

1/2 inch steel plate driven into the ground would also, depending on what kind of décor you are looking for.

how much room do you have to work with.

And asking the neighbor for advice might be a good idea, getting them involved is better than having them enact code-enforcement patrol.

Re: Retaining fence

Get a survey to establish without a doubt where the property line is located and then build anything you want on your property subject to local ordinance and HOA rules.

There is no fence that is going to hold back dirt. A fence on top of a retaining wall would.
