Replace In Ground Sprinkler Valve - Help Identify

There is a valve on my sprinkler system just where the water piping comes out of the house. It suddenly started leaking very badly - so much so that it wont get water to the zones. I know nothing about these systems and wondering is this a diy repair or should I call in the pros? See the pic of the valve in question. If someone thinks this is an easy fix point me in a direction. what is the name of the valve and what is an equivalent replacement. Thanks.

It looks like a backflow preventer. There's a cap on top that's missing. You might be able to get a kit to repair it. Cutting it out to replace it will not be fun.
