Removing rotten silver maple - pic

Our neighbor (who, btw, technically owns 40% of the tree) finally got fed up with worrying about our old rotten silver maple falling on her house and paid for the cost of cutting it down

Here's a pic of a 'slice' of the tree taken about 40 inches above ground.

That looks like the one we had taken down
It was hollow too - 54" straight across the trunk

My neighbor didn't want to chip the stump (both to save cost and avoid having to remove a fence). So now we have a.... maple planter??

Scuba_Dave 01-06-2010 08:22 PM

Yup, I filled mine with dirt & planted stuff
It's by the back fence, so out of the way
The dirt will help it rot out faster

Leah Frances 01-06-2010 08:24 PM

Oooh. Dave, do you have a pic of the stump being used as a planter? I would love to show it to DH, who hates the idea.

Scuba_Dave 01-06-2010 08:44 PM

Ah...mines been dead since '04...not looking so good anymore
I post a pic of what it looks like in Spring he may decide against it
I never took pics with flowers in it

I'm at the point where I am probably going to try the sledge on it this year
I've actually left it up as there is a certain type of small bee (sweat bee?) that makes little holes in it
They pollinate veggies & flowers & the stump is right near my veggie garden

I'm sure the fine folks over at the Woodworking forum wouldn't mind getting a hold of some of that as well ;)

That is one big piece of tree.

The other thing you can do is use the wall blocks to put a circle around the whole thing & bury it with dirt as a garden

That way you can't see the stump
All depends upon what the stump looks like
Sort of like the fire pit but filled with dirt

what you do is.... chainsaw it up, split it and cut it up and into 20" pieces and wrap them up and mail them one by one to:

Wow! That is some humungous tree! Good ideas SD & DM. Love the flowerbed solution. Perhaps open a glass top table shop??? Think that 'wood' look cool! Or maybe DM could make 'The world's biggest magic box' with a couple of slices!!! There's a challenge... Or build a cylindrical kid's playhouse! Now, that 'wood' be sharp! Hollow out the centers, stack 'em, join 'em (like a flower - with a full circle in the center & 5 -7 'petals' notched to fit around the hub), cut doorways & windows, roof 'em & Voila! Have fun!

We have a local artist that takes hollowed out logs and turns them into fire logs. At least that what he sells them as. Suppose to fill the center with kindling and fire it up.

I don't think most people use them for that, not at $75 to $150 bucks a piece.

My big Oak out front I want to cut about 5-6' up off the ground
Then cut the remaining stump into a slab & carve out our house number
Stain & seal it

I would think that would be a real maintenance headache. We had redwood garage doors at our last place and it was a real pain to keep them looking nice.

Looks like someone else did it
