Purple Plum Tree Leaning?

I planted a purple plum about 4 years ago. Everything was fine until about a month ago when I noticed the tree was leaning about 15-20 degrees. I think this is due to all of the rain we've been getting.

Anyway, the trunk is only about 3-4" in diameter and with a little effort the tree can be pulled into alignment. I recently purchased some of these tree straps from amazon to help realign the tree: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0...?ie=UTF8&psc=1

If I use the straps to pull the tree into alignment I'm assuming this will create an air gap underneath the tree at the root level. I'm reluctant to dig up that side of the tree for fear that I may damage its root system. Do I need to be concerned about the root level air gap? Will the gap naturally fill in over time?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Re: Purple Plum Tree Leaning?

You will do fine just strapping the tree back into place---then press the roots back with your foot---

Soak the ground around the tree before you start in order to soften up the soil.
chrisn and de-nagorg like this.
