Proper way to trim hedges.

Normally I'd just grab the electric hedge trimmers and shape these into a box. But I've also read and seen where you are supposed to go in with clippers to the interior and thin it out that way. Is the latter way the correct way and any tips on doing so? All my searches comes up with are taking a hedge trimmer to them.
Thanks,
HD
