Please review my plan for building a rock wall, and advise as necessary

Hello,

I'd like to build a low rock retainer wall in my back yard, but I've never done one before and I'm not sure if I know how. Here's the plan I have imagined.

First of all, let me describe the wall. It would be about 8' long x 2' high in the shape of a stretched letter "S." One end would abut to a large rock, and the other end would taper off and end at my lawn edging.

CONSTRUCTION. I plan on starting out by pouring a concrete footing. I would use bender board to get the shape I want, as well as for the concrete. I was thinking the width of the footing would be about 1' foot, and the depth would be 8" inches. Once set, I would build the wall using brown lava rocks (each about 8-10 inches in diameter). I'm not too sure about mortaring in the rocks, but I would add brown coloring to match the rocks. My back yard is tropical... this is the look I'm trying to continue.

That's my plan. I'm open to all advise and suggestions.

Thanks in advance.

You will need to leave a few runoff holes in it to let any water run through, if it is on a sloped area.

And depending on the total weight of the completed structure you might need a deeper footing, with a gravel water diversion channel to divert any runoff on the uphill side.

Your yard sounds relaxing, enjoy the theme.
