Planting grass over sand/gravel

I have attached some photos of my current driveway. I will be removing the green wall (was there to limit toys/balls from going to the woods).

Property is sloped as the water runs from the left of the house onto this area, and water from the beginning of the driveway drains to the left of the shed.

Curious to see your thoughts on proper drainage system to prevent damage to new grass which will be planted in the spring.

Would it be ideal to dig as much sand out, plant topsoil throughout, plant grass, and install some loose pebbles or gravel around the edges to cause any water to flow away from the grass?

Soil and sod laid cross ways and you won't have seed washing away. Do it in a dry season so you can control the needed water until it takes hold.

Re: Planting grass over sand/gravel

As long as you get at least 4-5" of good top soil, the sand on the bottom will just help it drain whenever the green space gets super soaked with rain. Just excavate the future green space area to where it will drain though, first. Do not try to grow grass on less than 3- 4 inch deep soil though, has been my experience.

I agree with Neal, sod is more stable to work with than seed, but not everyone has the extra funds or good backs, needed to lay sod. I always end up seeding as am old and poor-ish. .

If you do seed it, just use straw and sprinkle over it once the seed is broadcast down. Not choking thick straw 6 in. high straw coverage, but a dense enough mat of straw to hold the seed in place during the rains. JMO

Ayuh,..... It Appears that the water leaves the property right at the right hand end of the green wall,.?.?.?.
Right 'bout where I think I see a dam built outa pavers or retainin' wall blocks,..??
Is this Correct,..??

If so,... What I would do is,....
Remove the dam at the edge of the property,....
The water does in fact flow Away from there, Right,..??
If so,....
Remove the wall,....
'n have a good sized load of decent screened top dirt dropped just off the new blacktop into the hole that's there now,.....
Shovel, wheelbarrow, 'n rake out the load so ya got top dirt 'bout 1/2" to an inch above the blacktop at the edges, taperin(pitched) to the low spot ya took the dam outa,.....
Ya want the finish compacted/ settled grade to be dead flush, to 1/4" Below finish blacktop,....
Heavily seed it with Contractor's Quick-green seed,....
Mulch it fairly heavy with haychalf,...
Water it every day,.... in a week or so it'll be green,....
Soakin' the seed the day before super speeds up germination,... Just makes spreadin' it a real pain,...
If ya don't get a Downpour Gusher durin' the 1st 2 weeks, ya won't have any wash-outs to fix,...
If ya do, fix the wash-outs,....
Once rooted, the grass itself will act as the erosion control,...

What is "haychalf" anyway ?

I am too skeered to even put that word in my search bar, for fear of what it may bring up

Ayuh,.... It may be mis-spelled,.... rhymes with calf,...
Phonically, hay chaph,....
Haychaff,...

It's the hay on the barn floor the farmer cleans up, before he spreads fresh beddin' material,....
Well beatin', 'n fertilized,.......

My rule of thumb is, if you plant grass on sand or gravel intentionally it won't grow. Plant it around and accidentally get it near a patio paver it will grow like wildfire.
Fix'n it likes this.

I don't see any purpose of gravel for drainage but it will sure dull hell outta lawn mower blades and throw rocks at the neighbor kids.
