Newly planted cedar needles turning yellow

I'm in Birmingham Alabama. Heavy clay soil. Just planted 3 Deodar Cedars from 15 pound containers into the ground about a month ago.

All three are showing some yellow needles. One in particular is showing lots more than the others. This tree also has some discoloring at the root ball that appears like a fungus of some sort.

Help!

Are you sure that your soil has the proper nutrients that these need to thrive?

Some trees only grow in a base environment, others in an alkaline one.

Did you do a PH test to see what you have, then pick out a compatible tree, or think "It's pretty, it'll grow here"

This is an article about root rot. It does mention Deodar Cedars. You might have to amend the soil around the roots & water less. Could there still be some herbicide in the soil?

You have very interesting soil. Probably similar to the Red Mountain just a few miles from you:

Re: Newly planted cedar needles turning yellow

Chert is a sedimentary stone, which will eventually over time turn into limestone, at this point it's more like silica.

Re: Newly planted cedar needles turning yellow

Interesting, the dirt where this tree is planted is fill dirt used to create a berm to level the yard. They call this dirt "Chert". I added soil amendments to the hole before planting the tree. I'm going to be talking to the nursery this morning to see if they will send someone out to see what's going on.

My first thought was that the tree wasn't getting enough water. I suppose I may have to just dig up the root ball to check the roots in order to know for certain if its too dry or too wet or if the roots are rotted.

Can these trees handle your summer heat? Won't be causing them to brown, but they do look too close to the house and together.

Re: Newly planted cedar needles turning yellow

Update: I spoke to the nursery. They said since its only been planted a few weeks, it would not hurt to dig it up and inspect the roots. Said the yellowing may just be normal summer needle drop.

After digging around the top quarter of the tree, the roots look really good. I suppose I will go ahead and excavate the entire tree to be sure, but I'm a bit concerned with stressing the tree after seeing these top roots growing so well.

Thoughts?

Re: Newly planted cedar needles turning yellow

Simply an opinion, but you have good pictures and know what the soil is so I would go to the nursery rather than asking them to send someone out. Seems more apt to get a response sooner. Hasn't been often, but have had a few things like this come up over the years, have taken pictures with me, and that has been enough for them to be as certain as if they had actually been there. I do know though that we have had a number of new plantings and transplants over the years where they appeared to not be taking so well, sort of like you have, and gone into neutral or maybe even reverse for a bit, then a few months later adapt and take off, so they might tell you it's a matter of patience as much as anything.

Yes, the trees grow well here. They are planted at shopping malls and grocery store parking lots quite often.

This tree (one of 3 planted about a month ago) is yellowing from the inside. I'm trying to check the roots for signs of root rot. Otherwise, I'm just guessing that the tree has gotten too much water from the storms we've had recently and will recover in a few days.

Re: Newly planted cedar needles turning yellow

Thanks Dexter, I did send the pics to the nursery earlier today. So, when we spoke, they were reviewing the pics to make their suggestions.

As long as it's not going to cause undue stress on the tree, I'm going to dig on one side down to the bottom of the root ball to inspect for root rot. Then I'm going to trench a channel from the bottom of the root ball down the hill a bit and fill it with amended soil and gravel to provide a drainage path for the root ball to help prevent "wet feet" issues.

Hard work is easy to come by, when you control the supply.

Smart work, that's another thing. Elusive
