New lawn

Abe about a 30x7 backyard lawn, well not. It's patches of dirt and some lawn. Can I spread topsoil over the entire area and sow seeds into the topsoil? I really don't wan to til the entire area. Thanks

Just spread some grass seed in the patches of dirt, no need to spread topsoil over the entire yard.

The dirt can't be too compact, should be loose.

Take the leg of a woman's panty hose and fill it with your grass seed. Put it in a bucket of water to soak for about 3 days.
Then spread the seeds out on some news paper, when the seeds dry and split their ready to plant.
Rake the dirt and spread the seed and lightly cover with dirt. Water the areas every evening for about a week or two, but make sure the water doesn't puddle or has run off.
You should have good growth in about 8 to 10 days.

Forgot....
Don't cut the new grass for about 3 weeks and make sure your blades are very sharp.

ron
thats pretty interesting.

lucky.
if your in a hurry try rons ideas. if your not in as much of a hurry. spread a bunch of seed (whatever the bag says). then soak the area . you can then either just leave it = will take a while, months(depends on how much rain you get). or keep watering it till its grown well.

i have an area on my side yard. i just spread seed, NOTHING else.2 months now i have grass.

Don't you have to put a thin layer of soil covering over the seed? Thx

no. but it sure does help. just working it into the existing soil helps a lot also.
i have use a garden hose to soak the soil. aim it so it digs a little hole then keep moving, the seed then gets down in the soil.

just now i put down more seed. just before its raining.

You need to cover the seed with something, and not just because it helps it to grow. Wake up in the morning just to find the birds eating it.
