At the top of my honey-do list is to extend an existing privacy fence that our neighbors built up the sides of our backyard.
I have acquired all the cedar slats (8" x 6'). I still need to purchase the posts and horizontal supports and I'm trying to decide what to buy and could use some help.
For the posts I have heard that metal is the way to go; however, I have never seen an example and I'm not sure how it will look. Does anyone have any photos? Where can I buy these posts? If I decide to stick with wood, can I use treated 4x4 posts with my cedar slats?
For the horizontal supports I'm planning to use 3 rows of 2x4's. Can I use treated lumber with my cedar slats? If I get metal posts, how do I connect them?
Last question (for now) is about nails... I have a roofing and a framing nailer and it sure would be nice to use one of them for this project. Any problems with that?
I can hopefully answer a few of these...
What are the neighbors post material? I would simply go with 4x4x10 treated for the posts. Go 4ft into the ground.
Rails 2x4x? treated.
As far the the nailer, you can use the framing nailer with hot dipped nails.
Here is a link to mine i put up last summer. http://www.diychatroom.com/f49/cedar-fence-pics-61634/
