Is my Tree Dead?

When we bought the house it was near the end of winter so I wasn't expecting this tree to have any leaves, so I had no way to know if there was a problem. Now after spring only a handful of leaves showed up, and now they've all quickly died. I'm not sure what kind of tree it is or if there is anything I can do. There is no irrigation up front so neither the lawn or the tree have had any water. There are black sections of the bark that are "wet and sticky" and a ton of large-ish reddish colored ants all over it.
Attached are the pictures.
Its too bad if its dead, it would have provided some awesome afternoon shade for the front porch.

Sure looks dead to me. The way it's split it looks like a lightning strike.
That sap is the tree trying to heal itself.

I thought it might have been lightening. If the tree is still producing sap then perhaps with a little watering it might pull through. But I'm not holding out any hope. I DO want to get rid of it before it becomes a danger. If its still got sap then its still moist enough that I shouldn't have to worry about it toppling over right?
I just spent $600 on gutters and $1200 on insulation for the house so my budget for things like this is pretty much zero for the next couple months while I build up funds again.
