Question

My Birch tree is SAD...

Hi all,
Total brown thumb here lol. My wife and I planted this Birch tree last year, it's not totally dead but just looks like it's not doing so well. I believe the broken branch has a lot to do with it, what do I do to mend the broken branch? Also, are there soil tests I need to do?

Thanks!

OK, what is 10, 10, 10 exactly? Do I need to cover where the branch was with some kind of goop?

Thanks!

Re: My Birch tree is SAD...

That tree needs some serious trimming, get rid of all those lower branches for starters, here's a link.

I believe that studies have found that sealing a cut branch with wound seal (goop as you call it) does more harm than good.

Re: My Birch tree is SAD...

In addition, to what they're recommending try a soil test. About 4 in. down, at least. Sometimes one of the chemicals is too high besides the obvious of too low.

The phosphorous in my soil is extremely high. The nitrates & potassium were high.

Also, if that mulch is very loose & deep, if there is little actual fine soil for the roots to develop, the tree would have a hard time.

I like this site, if that is a River birch. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/care-ri...ees-68482.html

Your USDA zone is probably a 5.

Re: My Birch tree is SAD...

Also about that mulch. Never let it gather around the truck of the tree, especially birches. It attracts bugs, especially birch borers, which are deadly to birch trees. Those spikes are OK, not great but better than nothing.
