Moss in crepe myrtle - is it a bad thing?

Hi all - I've read a couple of articles about how moss is not good for crepe myrtles. Can you provide some insight as to whether or not this is true?

If it is not a good thing and should be removed, are there any specific tools/approaches to removing it? The tree is too tall for me to use a ladder to reach a lot of it (not to mention, I am afraid of heights). I've included a couple of pics, but they are not really showing just how much moss is in the tree.

Any advice you can give me would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

What's your location?
Looks like this should have been cut back long ago.

Are you in Savannah, Charleston, or further south?

Re: Moss in crepe myrtle - is it a bad thing?

I live in Central Florida. The moss just started a couple of years ago, and has not really spread to any other trees in the immediate area - although I noticed a neighbor of mine who now has the moss in their crepe myrtles. It was also in a smaller crepe myrtle that I have, but I was able to remove all it last year and it hasn't returned to that one -yet.

From all I've read about crepe myrtles, most information says that there is no need to repeatedly trim them - to let them grow naturally. The only time you really need to trim them is when you are dealing with branches that cross over one another - which admittedly I do have some that haven't been removed.

Crepe Myrtles propogate via root shoots, and do so very prolifically, so be aware. Today two, tomorrow 45. Comically, I always state that I trim Crepe Myrtles with a backhoe. Good luck with yours, and enjoy.

It's called "spanish moss" but it is more as a lichen, which is very invasive, although elegantly pretty.

Oh, it's Spanish Moss alright. And, to me, not very pretty. Still, the issue remains about whether or not what I've read is true - that this moss is bad for crepe myrtle health. Was hoping someone knew more about this than I do.

Oh, it's bad for anything it grows on. As I said, it is very invasive. Not much you can do about it since it thrives in its host's shade. Full sunlight may help discourage it. Kinda like kudzu, in that you can't control it. Canucks and northerners may not have a clue to what kudzu is.

Thanks. I guess I will just have to routinely hire someone to remove as much of it as possible. Glad it isn't kudzu though...
