Question

Maple Tree Bark Problems

I noticed one of my maple trees has some bark issues the other day:

This tree splits in the middle like a cactus (thanks vines!) and this is the biggest of the arms. As you can see, the bark is falling right off it at the bottom, and it looks like the wood there is completely dead.

The small branch coming off in the middle of the branch isn't looking too hot either.

Despite this, there is a significant amount of greenery growing off this branch and it all looks like it's doing well. No dying leafy branches or anything like that.

I really want this tree to survive. I don't have many trees that aren't terrible sumac trees, so keeping the few maples I have is very important to me.

Is there anything i CAN do or should do to help this tree along? Or is it another case of leave it alone and hope for the best?

Interesting article: http://plantclinic.cornell.edu/facts...ksplitting.pdf

My cherry tree looks like that, but the tree is old & now has termites on the dead wood. A guy from the local University Ag Extension came out to confirm.
But, yours may just be due to the weird weather.

Re: Maple Tree Bark Problems

If the tree gets a hard freeze when the sap is still up it might do that. As Nik did I would suggest sending that picture to your local ag extension. They would definitely be the ones to advise.
