Leveling patio space

I will try to explain best I can, I am planning to build a patio on a 10' x 14' spot, but it slopes down approx 1.5 ft - 2 ft top to bottom, it was a walkway to with gradual steps but everything was so rotted I had to tear it all out. What's the easiest way to level the ground, out in that area to make it suitable for a stone patio?
I am thinking to use cinder blocks to build a retaining wall on the low end, does that make sense or is there a better way to do this?

Hey jlatour,

Welcome to the site...

You'll definitely need a retaining wall to level out the ground if your planning on a patio. Using concrete blocks to level off the ground may sound easy, but if you want it to last, you'll need to dig a trench and pour concrete to use as a footing or base for the concrete blocks.

It's a little extra work, but without a solid footing concrete block walls sag, bow and crumble in a few years. Leaving your patio unlevel and potentially dangerous if you have small children who will trip and fall.

Another option are solid concrete retaining wall blocks sold at Lowes and The Home Depot. They also require a solid foundation, but it doesn't have to be poured concrete.

If you post some pictures of your project, it will help us all get a better idea of your yard.

Yes Welcome.

I agree with HomeInsulation and would suggest going to the retaining wall blocks instead of the cinder block. The foundation is critical.

Does it matter what kind of retaining wall blocks are used?
