Re: Lawn mower over desert landscape?

Great.

I'm glad to have been a source of good advice.

Makes me still useful, and not just taking up valuable space.

Absolutely useful, Ed. You have helped myself and others on multiple inquiries

I forgot to ask. If I use a concentrated liquid applied with a pump sprayer, should I delay doing this till I see fresh new green grass later this year?

I pulled up a few clumps of that brown grass and looked at the roots. I can't tell for sure if the roots are dead.

To the best of my knowledge, the weed killer needs green growing plant life, to transport the killer, VIA capillary action down to the roots.

So wait for the stuff to sprout a little, then hit it with the killer.

Have you seen the recent Ads, stating that ROUNDUP, is now rated as a Carcinogen?

Try to find a human life friendly one, or wear a respirator, and fully clothed, and shower right away after it's use.

Don't worry. I won't use anything with glyphosate. Roundup has been getting a lot of news coverage with the recent lawsuit. I guess we should close out this discussion then. I could always report back later this year if you guys want to know what additional steps I take

Re: Lawn mower over desert landscape?

I Would be interested in any steps taken and their results.

Are you looking for a vegetation free environment?

At least where the main area is concerned.

Was there a weed barrier, hardware cloth installed under the stones?

I have found that blown sand and dust settles on top of those, and allows grasses to sprout in it and take root through the cloth, and when you try to pull the grasses, you lift the cloth also.

What a pain that is, having to replace the cloth, and stone back.

Yeah, Vegetation free in front and back. I'm in Arizona and this property had a desert landscape from the beginning. No type of barrier in the backyard.

The front yard has plastic sheeting under the rock. Like you say, even the sheet plastic will accumulate a light layer of soil for some weeds and grass to sprout. But the plastic still blocks most of it.

I've been sneezing this afternoon. Must have got a snootful of grass pollen.

At any rate, I'll be reporting back on this later this year or early 2020.

Re: Lawn mower over desert landscape?

I bought a foreclosed home 3 years ago and the backyard was an utter mess. After few rains, the lawn was overgrown and gave unsightly appearance. I had to follow the standard mowing practices to avoid any fines from the government. Unfortunately when I tried my hand in lawn mowing, I ended up ruining the yard. Thankfully, one of my neighbors suggested me to call an expert. I did that and it turned out to be really great. I think you should call a professional for lawn service.

Thanks for responding Cherry.

I rarely pay anyone to do anything. I do all my own auto and home repairs now. I am still learning. I often find that a repair or maintenance task is something I have not done before. So I ask questions and learn how to do it.

You can play around with this and see what works on yours.

And it's safe for you and animals.

1 gallon of white vinegar. 2 to 2 1/2 cups epsom salt and I believe 1/2 cup of dawn original dish soap.

Mix in a sprayer or B & G tank and spray on the lawn.

Hi Ron,

I have used something similar in the past. But I have never used salt in the mixture. I am open to trying this. Do you think it will kill grass in addition to weeds?

Val says yes.

She used it a week ago.

I say go with a ground level deck with 6 mil. plastic under it.

Or.

You can do this at your own pace and maybe use just plain big squares.

Use one of these to make life easier and sell it when your done or keep for future plans.

Re: Lawn mower over desert landscape?

I would probably use a pump sprayer since my yard is not too big. It might be months before new green grass appears for me to try that liquid on.

I totally appreciate your learning spirit. Perhaps, after witnessing how a professional does repair or maintenance task, you would learn more!
