Insects and bugs around the house

Folks - what do you use for getting rid of bugs and insects in backyard? When we sit on the deck we feel a lot of insects flying around and some of them bit. The same with the front door. I see a number of insects. Hiring a pest control company is expensive. Is there anything I could buy and spray around the house?

It would help to know where you live.

There are inexpensive sprays that will prevent entry into the home for crwaling insects.....There are lawn treatments that will discourage many lawn insects.

There are bug lights that repel insects, there are contraptions that attract and kill flying insects.

There are foggers that clear misquito infestations.

There are a lot of ways to lessen "bugs".

I live in New Jersey. Can you recommend a few options?

Re: Insects and bugs around the house

1977.... honestly, explain what you are trying to get rid of....

If bugs entering the house, I swear by Ortho's home defense or the similiar Spectracide product. $5 per gallon

Go to the big box store, and get a bag of lawn granules to rid the lawn of insects. $10 depending on product and bag size.

If flying insects like mesquitos pecular to your property, get rid of any standing water. If it is a geographical problem, get repellent candles or lights out on your deck.

There is not one magical product....but there are numerous products all geared to differet bugs/circumstances.

There are tree/bush sprays.... 1000's of products. Talk to local folks who have the same problem...whatever that is.

If you're mainly concerned with bugs that bite, just get some OFF with DEET, or something similar. I like to work in the yard and have tried several brands but that's what worked best for me. Spray yourself before you go out and you can forget about bug bites!

+1 on Ortho Home Defense. About every 2-3 months or so, I spray around every door and window as well as the dryer vent.

Basically these are the issues.

1. The front door seems to have a lot of insects, spiders etc.
2. While sitting on the deck we always feel something or the other is biting.

Re: Insects and bugs around the house

The birds and the bats do a great job of insect control on my property and so I have bird feeders and a bat house in place.

Important to avoid plants that provide nice humid habitat for mosquitoes like ivy and jasmine and other tall ground covers. Lawns will also generate a lot of insect activity.

Ceiling fans or floor standing fans work well to keep bugs off of people and are non-toxic.

The bug zapper lights work well on some insects but are worthless for mosquitoes.

After I replaced the redwood deck along my house with a stone deck the mosquito count dropped dramatically.

Spraying may be OK for the highway people along the interstate but I do not use pesticides around my house. They all are designed to damage the nerve system of insects and people, especially children, are also susceptible. There is a reason why farm workers have double the rate of cancers as the general population.

I have that concern about the repellant sprays that you spray on your body to keep them off, too. This time of year, in the area I live in, you'd have to have so many bats and birds they would block out the sun in order to eat all the pests. But every time I spray on repellant, I wonder what I'm really subjecting myself to, especially in the long term. But the alternative is being eaten alive by mosquitoes, ticks and no-see-ums.

I've wondered that too, so I looked up the SDS for Cutter DEET repellant. It says wash thoroughly with soap and water.

Not to hijack your thread but I am also from NJ. We are now getting ants coming into the home, as well as spiders in the basement. I was trying find a product to spray all around the exterior perimeter of the house to help stop them coming in and killing. I’d rather not spray anything inside because of my almost 2 year old. Would the ortho or spectricide be good or buy some professional stuff?

I'm originally from Ohio, with similar problems, and I offer a path to a solution:

1. I wouldn't worry about a few bugs on the screen. Unless they're hurting something, no biggie.

2. If you're getting bitten that can be serious. It's important to know by what or have a general idea.

As a general thing, they used to sell "foggers" you could use to spray the yard, but they were temporary, but they did work, though I had a buddy whose mom was allergic to it, or at least hated the smell.
