Inground Rez to collect Roof and Sump Water

I'm about finished our Reno and moving onto backyard, part of which includes taking the roof and sump water 80' back through 4" ABS. It will be just below ground and drain to daylight.

What I'd like to do is capture a large amount of that water in a Rez which I can pump from for our lawn and garden.

How can I create a 500-1000 gallon Rez? Plastic container? Form concrete?

I assume the water would be safe for vegetable garden.

Your idea certainly very doable but 1 of the questions you need to answer 1st is what is the water table in your area? If you've a high water table you don't want to use a lightweight plastic tank because the water may force it upward when it's empty. In that case you would want to use a concrete tank such as a septic tank.

If the water table is the question there are many sources of plastic tanks that are quite reasonably priced. Your best bet would be to look for one in your area because shipping can get expensive for them. You definitely want a round 1 because they are much less likely to deform under the pressure of the dirt above them.

Re: Inground Rez to collect Roof and Sump Water

We're on the top of a ravine so ground water isn't an issue but I would like to keep the top at grade with a cover so I can easily access.

Drain from house would empty into top and I would need an overflow to continue the rest of the way back for big rain falls.

Maybe digging the hole and forming for concrete is the best route. Shouldn't have to worry about pressure on walls this way.

Any idea on who to source plastic Rez from?

For a tank that size you might as well buy a septic tank. Just because you are on top of a ravine does not, in itself, negate ground water - I have seen free-flowing artesian springs on the top of hills. If your area is prone to freezing you might want to bury it deeper. Even if you drain it, any frost may jack it.

Underground water cistern was the search I should have been doing. Lot's of 500 gallon options.

Now I have to figure out if water from roof and sump are good for growing vegetables.

Can't see why not. They're what feed the plants when it rains. Unless you have contaminated soil around your foundation.
