How to trim this oak tree?

I want this oak tree to grow up, more than out, so that it does not end up growing right into the house. I have a pole saw, and a ladder. Which main branch, and exactly where should I start pruning?

Thanks for helping this newbie

Re: How to trim this oak tree?

Welcome to the forum elmon.

It is a very beautiful tree no doubt. However, imo, that tree has outgrown it's landscaping appeal. Furthermore, it may eventually cause structural, plumbing or roof problems. Those old oaks will grow forever and get huge.

If you are not married to it, I would suggest taking it down before it gets much bigger and replace it with a dwarf version of a maple, like your neighbors have. They stop at about 20-25 feet. Just a suggestion.

Please wait for more suggestions on how to trim the tree the way you want.

Not to pass the buck, but with a big beautiful tree like that, it would pay to bring in a tree pro and let them assess it on-site and come up with the best plan.

It looks smaller in the middle photo. Too bad it's directly in front of that large window. I hate to see mature trees cut down unless absolutely necessary. I would call in an arborist who can assess it's health and offer good advice on what and where to prune. They can recognize vulnerable limbs and avoid unbalancing the tree as well as removing limbs without launching them through your roof.

Re: How to trim this oak tree?

A good default strategy for trimming a big tree like that is to cut off any major branches that are growing at a down angle and leave the ones growing at an up angle.

For example that would mean not the cut in red, but if you move along that branch, there is one coming off of it that is level if not a down angle, cut that one. On the major branch same side closer to the house, there is a similar branch that should go, etc.

I would call 2-3-4 arborists over and ask for estimates to do what you want. Listen carefully to each and it will become clear to you....the best approach. You can hire one...or not.

Re: How to trim this oak tree?

I agree with Jmon. That tree is way too big and way too close to the house. Not only will it potentially fall on the house, the leaves will clog gutters and the roots will only cause problems. Cut it down now before it's a more difficult job and causes you headaches. I know it's a shame, but people need to think about how big a tree will grow before planting it. Oaks grow to 80 feet tall.
