How to get rid of quack grass?

Hello all, I have had a big patch of quack grass grow in my yard. I've reading that the best way to get rid of it is to kill it with roundup. Or live with it. I don't want to kill half my lawn to get rid of it. But I've read another option is to fertilize every two weeks to help the existing grass to grow and hopefully take back over. I'm kind of doubtful on this approach, but I think it's worth a shot.

So, if I plan to fertilize every two weeks, what fertilizer is the best to do this? What I've read doesn't state what ratio to use, just a low amount. I don't want to burn my lawn with too much. I also have underground sprinklers so watering isn't an issue. And right now, it'll be 90 degrees plus here for about a week.

Thanks in advance!!!

I would let a dozen ducks feed on it. Did you mean couch grass ?

I'm not aware of any selective herbicide for quackgrass.

Roundup with kill it . . . along with everything else. Which may be your best option.

I'd think the fertilizer approach would fertilize the quackgrass as well.

Thats what I thought too, the quackgrass would just grow twice as fast. But its worth a shot, I'd just have to mow more often.

Re: How to get rid of quack grass?

We have something around here I can't identify but we just call it bunch grass and the best way to kill it is RoundUp - we pour it into a cup and 'paint' the leaves of the bunch grass with a small brush which sort of makes a non-specific herbicide specific and doesn't harm the grass we want to keep.

What I've noticed if I let the grass grow like skip of week of mowing it blends in. But once I mow, that patch is a bright green and stands out. I'm sure it only bugs me.

I've never heard either term before.

If you're mowing it to short , you'll get all kinds of weed problems . Bluegrass (if that's what you have) needs to be long enough if it's going to be the dominant yard plant .

I realize ND isn't exactly like Iowa , but here are some tips :

By looking at the picture that would certainly be my first thought also but I didn't know that St. Augustine grass could survive that far north.

Re: How to get rid of quack grass?

ND is a bit too cold for St, Augustine grass. Maybe a bird flying over dropped some seeds off in ND of the more cold tolerant Raleigh strain. I dunno.

Re: How to get rid of quack grass?

We have stuff like that and it survives the winter just fine so, while it may look like a variant of St Augustine, I doubt it is. My method of dealing with it would still apply though a patch like that could likely be sprayed if one was careful.

Google rope wicking roundup. Works best if undesirable vegetation is taller than desirable vegetation. Yes, for those that would rather walk they have those too. You may want to apply walking backwards to avoid leaving dead foot prints of desirable vegetation in about 10 days.
