Question

How do I prune water sprouts / runners / vertical on a plum tree?

Starting a new thread.

So, plum tree is several years old and the prior owner was in the habit of chopping every new vertical growth each spring. I don't think he did it last year. One neighbor suggests pruning only 1/3 of the older ones each year and the other neighbor suggests take it all off every year.

I also have an apple tree that does bear fruit and would want to prune that correctly as well.

Suggestions? Any on line guides, I like pictures!

Thanks!

Jim

Don't know why you started a new thread, but look at this if you need pictures. http://extension.uga.edu/publication...Woody%20Plants

Good link from Chandler. No doubt there are all sorts of online publications on this topic. A lot depends on the species of tree or bush. Different species can cope with different degrees of 'enthusiasm' when it comes to pruning or cutting back.

Locate this year's growth (you can tell by the difference in the bark color) and cut the sucker 3 buds above it. That will give you this year's fruit and do away with quite a bit of extraneous growth. You won't hurt the tree, as they are quite vigorous.

Thanks Chandler48. So cut 3 buds above where the sucker leaves the branch it's growing from? Also this tree is kind of a mess, some suckers are a year or more old - same to them? I'm told there is no fruit on this plum tree as it's an "ornamental".
