Help with a Stihl trimmer

I have a gas powered Stihl string trimmer that I can't get running well. It of course ran great the first season I bought it, but now it won't. I made sure that I drained the gas when I stored it, and have since only used the pre-mixed Stihl branded fuel. What happens is when I eventually get it started, and pull the trigger, it just bogs out and dies, similar to a lawn mower that you don't let warm up for a minute before engaging the blades.

I have let it warm up, choke on, choke off, ensured air filter is clean. I haven't gotten the courage to take apart the carburetor though. My local hardware store told me to just buy a new carburetor. Thoughts?

PS: I'm about sick of gas lawn tools. Aside from my trusty honda mower, everything else gives me trouble. I may just switch to battery powered stuff.

Thanks for the tip. After doing a bunch more googling/youtubing, it seems that a popular issue is the muffler getting clogged. It's just a cylindrical metal mesh cylinder, like an over-sized thimble. I might take a look at this this weekend.

Re: Help with a Stihl trimmer

Try fiddling with the choke while it's running at full power. If you can get it to run smoothly, then replace the carb. I had a similar issue with an Echo blower. Tried a bunch of things including the exhaust mesh. Finally replaced the carb and that fixed the problem.
