Help identify weed please

I thought I had this licked after applying Scotts Turfbuilder Weed and Feed about a month ago. They were almost gone, but today while cutting the grass I noticed that they have rebounded and seem to be spreading fast. It's too early to apply another application so I want to get some weed killer but want to make sure it is effective on this particular weed. Any help is appreciated.

Re: Help identify weed please

At that distance it looks similar to Chick Weed. I applied Scotts the first week of March and my Chick weed is thriving really well. No more Scotts of anything for me. If I want to buy weed seed I'll look elsewhere.

I'm thinking weed pre-emergent needs to be applied in November then again in late February.

Pic is not my Chickweed.

Now that I see your close up I'm thinking not Chickweed.

Re: Help identify weed please

It looks kind of like slender speedwell but still tough to call for sure, what you can do though is get In contact with your local cooperative extension, pull a sample for them root and all and they will identify it for you for free! It looks pretty well established though probably why the weed and feed didn't get it (most weed and feeds utilize pre emergents unless specified otherwise) your probably better off getting a stand alone herbicide to kill it off, especially if this is primarily the only problem spot why do a blanket app and cover your entire lawn with herbicide she. You can just spot spray for better results and sustainability. Also it might be a smart idea to get a soil test done poor soil condition and compaction may be favorable for the weeds rather than your turf grass

Re: Help identify weed please

I went out and picked a few of these weeds and took a picture on a white paper background. Hope this helps to identify this thing. I've also searched through the USDA Zone 5 weed identifiers using their photos. I can't find anything that matches this.

It looks like the university of Illinois has a co-op extension would definitely have their master gardeners take a look.

Re: Help identify weed please

I can't recall the name. But does not matter much. Just get a 3 Way Broadleaf Herbicide. Whatever brand your store carries. Mix it in a pump up sprayer.

It is a broad leaf weed. And I disagree with the other post. Most weed & Feeds and not pre-emergent. The are post emergent.
If they have a pre-emergent it is just called fertilizer with crabgrass control. because that is about the only way to control grassy weeds.

Weed & Feed is for broadleaf weeds which are really controlled after they come up. The fine particles are suppose to stick to the weed. Then gets absorbed thru the leaf blade, not the roots.

Spraying is more effective since you wet the whole leaf blade. And the granular falls off sometimes with a granular type of product.
What happened is you killed some but more weed seeds have germinated.
There is really no pre emergent that works for this type of weed.
Just keep a thick lawn. And spray and kill the weeds before the can drop new seeds for next year.
